In the current Technology and Computer age, The Mac OS X is one of the premier operating systems. It uses a unique file system called Mac OS Extended format that is characterized by simplicity and enhanced metadata attributes. These characteristics greatly simplify the Mac OS X file structure despite the higher complexity needed for the underlying implementation that leads to some compatibility complications during deployment.
The Mac OS X Extended file system uses unique file elements namely file attributes, resource forks, bundles, and packages. By using several file elements, the complexity is hidden to the user. Each file/folder in the Mac OS X file structure has attributes that include creation and modification date, ownership, permissions, access control lists, spotlight information, finder labels, and legacy file type information.
To streamline user interaction, Apple has utilizes a forked file system to make complex items (like applications) encapsulated as a single icon. This allows multiple data to appear as a single item in the file structure. Originally, the Mac OS used forked files when dealing with applications and documents making user interaction a lot simpler. However, other operating systems don’t use forked file systems bringing about compatibility issues. When copying a forked file to another operating system, the resource forks information will be segregated as a hidden file. For instance, the Mac OS will split a forked file as 2 separate entities when copying such file to Windows FAT32 file system. The data fork will have the same original name while resource fork would end up as a ._filename.doc that would be hidden to the user in the Finder.
